I’ve finished a book I’ve always meant to read, Michael Shaara’s For the Love of the Game. He and his son were the authors of the Civil War trilogy that included his Killer Angels and his son’s Gods and Generals. I read those books a few years ago and enjoyed them immensely. Historical fiction, at its best, is captivating. You could probably scroll back and find a review.
When I found out the father wrote For the Love of the Game, one of my favorite baseball movies, I put it on my list. I finally read it the other day.
The book is hypnotizing; I could have finished it in a sitting. The writing isn’t necessarily brilliant but the story is captivating. Even though I knew what happened and the ending would have been obvious had I not, I still felt my chest getting tight as I read. Shaara is a rare storyteller who can produce a physical reaction in his readers.
